The current owner (S.N.J. S.) purchased the Dutch Brass Wall Hook from P.P. in Baarland, the Netherlands.

The previous owner, P.P. from Baarland (the Netherlands), stated that the object had been in his collection since the 1990's.

According to the previous owner, the object had previously been in a private collection in the Netherlands since the 1990's.

No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner.

Background Information:
This finely cast brass wall hook dates to the 16th-17th century and represents an attractive example of Dutch domestic metalwork from the Early Modern period. The openwork heart-shaped upper section, combined with the robust forward-projecting hook, reflects the balance between functionality and decorative craftsmanship that characterised household fittings in prosperous Dutch homes.

Such brass wall hooks were mounted on wooden beams, wall panels, or cupboard interiors and were used to suspend copper kettles, earthenware jugs, pewter vessels, baskets, game, poultry, and other household utensils. Their durable construction made them suitable for supporting relatively heavy objects while contributing to the orderly appearance of kitchens and living spaces.

The use of decorative brass wall hooks is well documented in contemporary Dutch genre painting. Works by Joachim Beuckelaer, Quiringh Brekelenkam, Jan Steen, and Gabriel Metsu depict comparable cast hooks supporting copper cooking vessels and household equipment in the kitchens and interiors of well-to-do citizens. Particularly noteworthy is Joachim Beuckelaer's The Well-Stocked Kitchen (1566), where a cast metal wall hook attached to a wooden beam carries a large copper cauldron, illustrating precisely the practical role of such fittings within affluent domestic interiors. In contrast, paintings by Adriaen Brouwer and Adriaen van Ostade show that more modest households often relied on simple iron nails rather than decorative cast hooks.

Cast in brass using reusable moulds and finished by hand, these fittings were produced by specialised founders and supplied through regional markets across the Dutch Republic. While once common household objects, complete examples survive in relatively limited numbers, as many were discarded during renovations or recycled for their valuable metal.

This piece provides a direct and tangible connection to daily domestic life during the Dutch Golden Age, when carefully crafted brass fittings combined utility with refinement and formed an integral part of well-appointed household interiors."
