Pendente a croce vichinga del X–XII secolo (Metallo e periodo)

Viking Early Medieval Cross Pendant (10th–12th Century)

Early medieval cross pendant, a religious object associated with the Christianization period in Northern and Eastern Europe. Pendants of this type were worn by newly baptized individuals as an expression of their adoption of the Christian faith.

Period / Dating

Early Middle Ages, approximately 10th–12th century AD. The period was characterized by intensive trade and military contacts involving the Vikings (Varangians) and the spread of Christianity throughout Northern and Eastern Europe.

Material and Manufacturing Technique

Cast bronze (copper alloy). The pendant was likely produced using a casting technique. An integrated suspension loop allows it to be worn on a leather cord or chain.

The pendant has a natural patina developed over a long period of time. The metal appears stable, and the object retains its recognizable original form. The visible surface details reflect its age and historical character.

Formal and Decorative Features

The pendant represents the variety of cross forms characteristic of the early medieval period. Its shape, proportions, arm endings, and decorative details reflect the artistic traditions and metalworking techniques of the time. Individual examples may differ in their overall form and ornamentation.

Provenance and Documentation

The cross pendant was acquired in 2025 from a private collection in the United Kingdom. Prior to that, it formed part of a European collection dating back to the 1970s. The item is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and documentation relating to its provenance.
