Otherwise clean and fresh in colour.
Hand-signed “Miró” in pencil directly on the cloth, lower right. Pencil on the checked fabric is naturally faint; see detail photo. Stamp from Mourlot on the back.
Joan Miró (Barcelona 1893 – Palma de Mallorca 1983) was a Catalan painter, sculptor and printmaker. He was one of the central figures of twentieth-century modernism. Associated with the Surrealist circle in Paris from the 1920s, he developed a personal language of signs, stars, figures and pure colour that he pursued across painting, ceramics, sculpture and the graphic arts. From the late 1940s, printmaking became a major part of his practice. Working with Fernand Mourlot and later with the Maeght workshops, he produced more than a thousand lithographs and a large body of etchings. He repeatedly tested unconventional supports and techniques. His work is held by major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Tate, London, and the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona, which he founded in 1975.
