The Wahl-Eversharp Doric Stenographer (often simply called the Steno or Secretary Pen) is a highly rare and fascinating variant of the famous Doric line, introduced in the 1930s in the United States.
Unlike the standard Doric models, it was a specialized tool designed for those who needed to take notes quickly and transcribe texts using shorthand (stenography).
Here are the main features that make this model unique for collectors:
- Design and Dimensions
• "Extra-Slim" Profile: Compared to the bulky classic Dorics, the Stenographer features an extremely long and slender body (around 143 mm in length), designed to be lightweight and prevent hand fatigue during long writing sessions.
• Faceted Aesthetic: It retains the iconic geometric faceted design (Art Deco style) made of celluloid, typical of the Doric line. Among the most famous historical colours are the crosshatched green (Green Shell or Hatched) and anthracite gray with white mottling.
- Filling System
• Bulb Filler: Unlike the classic lever or vacuum-filler systems found in other Dorics, the Stenographer utilizes a bulb filler mechanism. Unscrewing the blind cap at the end of the barrel reveals a small rubber sac that you squeeze to draw ink. This provided an excellent ink capacity (up to 50 drops).
- The Nib
• The nibs mounted on this pen are long and flexible 14k gold. Many examples feature the "FL" (Flexible) engraving and a heart-shaped breather hole, which was ideal for creating the line variation required for shorthand symbols. Other models were fitted with nibs marked "MN-F" (Manifold Fine).
