English version

very rare and exceptional album, known as "the alternate version" of the Tintin story "L'Ile Noire" (The Black Island). Only 3 copies are known worldwide, that were handled by Hergé, his assistant Bob de Moor and his secretary Baudouin van den Branden. This is more than a comic book: it's an historical document, a working document.

What is the story behind this very special book?
The first nine Tintin albums were first published in black and white, Le Crabe aux Pinces d’Or being the last one, published in 1941. In those days, Hergé used to add as many pages as he felt were needed to tell the story, which resulted in albums containing up to 140 pages (!) Each page consisted of 3 strips, each containing 2 panels.

In 1942 his editor, Casterman, convinced him to start publishing his albums in colour, thanks to an offset printing machine they acquired. At the same time, as paper was becoming very scarce towards the end of WW2, the editor also suggested to decrease the number of pages per album.
Hergé accepted that he would create colour versions of his first albums, and agreed to reduce the number of pages to 62 in the process. In order to do this, he would need to create 4 strips per page, and adapted the panels to the new format. Hergé realised that this task, which would finally take a whole year, could only be accomplished by hiring assistants, and create an "atelier"...
This is how the Studios Hergé were born.

In the same period, Hergé asked his editor for printing proofs in black and white of the Tintin albums. He wanted to use those to send them to newspapers abroad, as they could be used for reproduction and publication. Casterman produced simple printing proofs but Hergé suggested to bind them and to add a cover. As the war was still going on sending the proofs in form of a book would decrease the risk that they would be confiscated by the occupier. As a result, l’Oreille Cassée, Le Crabe aux Pinces d’Or, l’Etoile Mystérieuse, Le Secret de la Licorne and L’Ile Noire were printed in black and white by Casterman by the end of 1943. Ten copies of each album were delivered at Hergé's house in November 1943, so that he could start shipping them.

Today, these albums are known as "les éditions alternées" (the alternate editions). Because they consist of bound pages, that were printed only on one side, each album strangely consists out of 2 blank pages alternating with two printed pages.

For the "alternate version" of L'Ile Noire, the reworked pages used were the ones published in the first colour edition in August 1943 (see above), but exceptionally printed in black and white. The cover was taken from the first edition with full page cover of the album, that was published in 1942. This combination, of which only 10 copies were made (plus 10 copies that were kept in the Casterman archives) already makes this album very exceptional and extremely rare.

The album that is up for auction today is so much more exceptional, almost unique, because it is one of the 3 known copies that were used in preparation of the completely revised version of the 'Ile Noire' story in 1963, as commissioned by British editor Méthuen.
The completely renewed version was finished by Hergé's 'right hand man' Bob de Moor and published in 1965.
This is why, in this copy of the album, you will find handwritten notes and even cut-out panels that Hergé wanted to see redrawn. This makes us witnesses of his perfectionism...

A few examples :
1- on page 4 we see Tintin escaping from the train coupé, as the detectives fell asleep ;
but, Hergé asks himself, where is Milou (Snowy) ...?
When we turn to page 5 of the "alternate version", we see that the scène has been highlighted by the cut-out.
In the redrawn 1965 version, we see Milou next to Tintin...

2- While pursuing Tintin, the detectives meet an old man smoking a pipe on page 5; it is of course Tintin in disguise.
Milou jumps out of the window chasing a cat, thus blowing Tintin's cover.
Hergé spots that the pipe has disappeared - and the scene is cut out.
In the redrawn 1965 version, the pipe has been found ...

3- When walking through the moorland towards the Black Island Tintin, in kilt, holds his walking stick in a way that would make it impossible to swing it above his head like he does in a following panel.
The scene is cut out and is of course corrected in the redrawn 1965 version.

4- On top of the tower, Tintin wears his Scottish hat the wrong way in comparison to following panels.
Another cut-out, another correction.

The images in colour are not included in this lot, they are only meant to illustrate how this exceptional working document was used.
So, because this is a working document, the album has several cut-outs, but with good reason!
This album is in fact the 62 pages version, the only version printed in black and white, but contains almost 120 pages.
Across the cover, Hergé drew a red cross indicating that he wanted a totally new cover for the 1965 revised version (which would become the mythical cover depicting Tintin who steers his boat toward The black Island).

If ever you wanted to peak over Hergé's shoulder and be a witness to his creative work, this is your chance to get your hands on an historical document!
