Opis od sprzedawcy
A Roman carnelian intaglio. The she-wolf with the twins. 1st-2nd century A.D
Size 12.6mm.
Weigh 0.72g.
Parallels: The Metropolitan Museum of New York Database, inv. 41.160.693.
The allegorical scene refers to the famous founding myth of Rome: the twins Romulus and Remus suckle at the she-wolf’s teats. The animal faces left but turns her head to the right to watch over the two infants. A groundline is visible. According to tradition, Rome was founded in 753 B.C.; the twins, children of the god Mars and the mortal Rhea Silvia, were abandoned on the banks of the Tiber by their uncle. A she-wolf found them and nursed them until the shepherd Faustulus took them in. The image of the wolf feeding the twins was a recurring subject in Roman Republican and Imperial art. The sculpture shows slight wear and chipping on the edge; the stone has an attractive colour.
Photos are made with different lights to show more of the colour. All measurements are approximately
