This is a Japanese plane "鉋 Kanna". Unlike Western planes, which are used by pushing, Japanese planes are used by pulling. Japanese steel, popular for use in katana and kitchen knives, features prominently in Japanese planes, with the characteristic that the blades last a long time if properly sharpened.
