Description:
This is a demon mask used in "Menburyu," a traditional folk performing art handed down in southern Saga Prefecture. This mask is worn by dancers during dedicatory rituals to pray for a bountiful harvest.
Artist Profile:
Born in 1915. He produced Furyumen masks used in "Kashima Furyu" and other traditional performing arts of Saga Prefecture. He possessed high skills particularly in the production of "Onnamen" (female masks). Designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Saga Prefecture, he devoted more than 65 years to painting and mask carving until his passing at the age of 82.
