Description:
This work is by Matsuo Toshio, a master of modern Japanese painting. Peonies are a particularly representative subject for him. This piece is one of 200 limited edition woodblock prints produced by the long-established workshop Unsodo, depicting the process where colors were applied to the preparatory drawing (shita-e) during the creation of a Japanese painting.
Artist Profile:
Born in Nagasaki Prefecture in 1926. He received numerous awards from Nihon Bijutsuin, the largest academic art institution in Japan. In 1994, he became a member of the Japan Art Academy. In 1998, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. In 2000, he was recognized as a Person of Cultural Merit. In 2009, he was appointed Chairperson of Nihon Bijutsuin. In 2012, he received the Order of Culture. He passed away in 2016.
