Meet ´´Jan´´, a young man, seated frontally in a rattan armchair, his hands calmly folded while he meets the viewer’s gaze with a direct and introspective expression. Painted in 1952, the work reflects the figurative tendencies of post-war European painting, where psychological presence and simplified form often took precedence over strict naturalism.

Van der Stelt employs a restrained yet expressive palette, allowing the sitter’s pale complexion and vivid striped tie to stand out against the darker suit and decorative background. The slightly elongated facial features, flattened space, and rhythmic patterning of the rattan chair and wallpaper lend the portrait a modernist sensibility. In this respect the work resonates with the broader tradition of twentieth-century portraiture associated with artists such as Amedeo Modigliani in its elongated physiognomy, as well as the psychologically charged seated portraits of Chaïm Soutine. The direct, frontal pose of the sitter—combined with the intimate, decorative interior—also recalls the composed yet personal portrait format often seen in the work of Frida Kahlo.

The painting balances intimacy and formal composure: the sitter’s symmetrical pose and careful attire evoke the tradition of formal portraiture, while the painterly handling and subtle distortions introduce a distinctly modern character. The elegant rattan chair not only situates the figure within a domestic interior but also contributes to the painting’s decorative rhythm, framing the sitter almost like a stage setting. As such, the work offers a compelling example of post-war figurative portrait painting, combining personal presence with the aesthetic language of European modernism.
