Kumi Sugai – Abstract Composition – Original Silkscreen – Hand Signed – Ed. 17/1000 – Unframed – No Reserve
⸻
Description
No Reserve Auction.
Offered here is an original silkscreen print by Kumi Sugai (1919–1996), one of the most internationally recognized Japanese artists of the 20th century who built his career in Paris and became associated with the École de Paris.
The composition exemplifies Sugai’s distinctive visual language of geometric abstraction. Bold orange and yellow forms are contrasted with green circular elements and diagonal hatching, creating a dynamic balance between movement and structure. This graphic vocabulary, often compared to road signs and industrial symbols, is characteristic of Sugai’s celebrated Hard-edge abstraction period, where clarity, tension, and visual rhythm play a central role.
Sugai’s works are included in major museum collections worldwide, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York. Smaller format works such as this provide an excellent entry point for collectors interested in post-war Japanese abstraction and the international modernist movement.
