J. & L. Lobmeyr - Drikkeglas - Glas - Grevens våbenskjold, ca. 1870

Rare antique armorial drinking glass by J. & L. Lobmeyr, Vienna, dating to circa 1870–1880. This finely made clear glass tumbler was individually mouth-blown and decorated by hand with detailed wheel engraving. One side bears an elaborate aristocratic coat of arms surmounted by a coronet with nine clearly visible pearl-tipped points. In the Central European and Austro-Hungarian heraldic tradition, this form is consistent with a count’s coronet, or Grafenkrone, indicating that the glass was most probably commissioned for a comital household. The shield is surrounded by ornamental drapery, flowers and tasselled decoration. The reverse of the glass is engraved with a delicate botanical composition of flowers, leaves and grasses. A continuous engraved garland of leaves and flowers encircles the upper section. The characteristic engraved J. & L. Lobmeyr signet is discreetly incorporated into one of the flowers in the upper border. The underside retains a visible snapped pontil scar from the traditional hand-finishing process. The identity of the original noble family has not yet been established, and no specific family attribution is claimed. Maker and dating Maker: J. & L. Lobmeyr Workshop: Vienna, Austria Probable date: circa 1870–1880 Period: Late 19th century Style: Historicism Original commission: Armorial drinking service made for a count’s household Family represented by the coat of arms: Currently unidentified The dating is based on the engraved Lobmeyr signet, the mouth-blown construction, the snapped pontil scar, the style of the engraving and the historical character of the surviving service. Material and technique Clear mouth-blown glass Fine hand wheel engraving Engraved Lobmeyr signet Snapped pontil scar on the underside Dimensions Height: 8.8 cm Upper rim diameter: 6 cm Base diameter: 5 cm Condition Excellent antique condition for its age. No chips, cracks, repairs or restoration. The upper rim and the thick glass base are intact. The engraved coat of arms, floral decoration and Lobmeyr signet remain crisp and clearly visible. Only light surface scratches and minor traces of historic handling are visible upon close inspection, entirely consistent with the age and former use of the glass. The irregular area on the underside is the original snapped pontil scar associated with the traditional hand-finishing process and is not later accidental damage. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. Historical significance J. & L. Lobmeyr was one of the leading luxury glass houses of imperial Vienna and produced individually designed and engraved table services for royal, aristocratic and wealthy private clients. This surviving glass is an unusual example of a bespoke armorial commission, combining a count’s coat of arms, highly detailed botanical engraving and the discreet Lobmeyr workshop signet. Shipping The glass will be packed with several protective layers and placed in a rigid inner box, followed by a second strong outer box. It will be shipped by registered and insured international delivery with tracking.
