Layard was an English traveller, archaeologist, historian and diplomat. He is best known for uncovering a large proportion of the Assyrian palace reliefs in Nimrud and Nineveh. Some of these discoveries are discussed to this work. Layard sent several specimens to England which still forms the greater part of the collection of Assyrian antiquities in the British Museum.

Scarce copy, of Layard’s Second Expedition to Assyrian cities of Nineveh and Babylon. The book is lavishly illustrated, with a frontispiece ‘Palace of Sennacherib’, folding map, and 145 wood-cut engravings including full-page plates.
Published by John Murray, London, 1867. Publisher’s original contemporary full calf. Spine in six compartments with raised bands decorated in gilt. Gilt lettering pieces within black label to compartment two. Marbled fore edges page. Top page edges gilt.
Book Dimensions: 19 x 13 cm and Number of Pages: 413 including index
Condition
External covers with light wear at corners, and edges, and with minor rubbings to head and foot of spine. Internally, in very good condition. Old presentation label dated 1883 with neat ink on inside front cover page. Also a printed name with blue ink on title page. Pages are clean, and unmarked. Inner hinges are very good. All pages are tightly held at the gutter. The fold out map is complete. All plates are clean and in nice condition (Please see pictures).
