The cross in its religious symbolism obviously represents the crucifixion, but on a deeper level, it signifies self-surrender and detachment from everything that constitutes the personality. It is the breaking away from the entire mechanics of the personality, and therefore from the wheel of reincarnations.

When an initiate undergoes crucifixion, a cosmic crucifixion, they are completely liberated from the plane of reincarnations. And if they return, it is only to contribute something; it is no longer for experiencing something.
