Description from the seller
Count de Las Cases, Memorial of Saint Helena followed by Napoleon in exile, Ernest Bourdin, 1842
Illustrations mainly by Charlet.
Over 800 wood engravings in the text. 2 frontispieces. 27 hors-texte illustrations on Chine mounted on vellum.
Enriched copy with some colored inserts at the time of binding (2 for the first volume, 3 for the second), likely from books on military costumes. Additionally, in the second volume, a hand-colored portrait of Wellington, taken from an edition of Mémoires d'Outre-Tombe.
The two volumes are in beautiful double green bindings, unfortunately scuffed and damaged, with lovely gold frames and romantic motifs. Notably, the spines feature decorations of birds, roses, and frightening goats.
The front cover of the first volume, which stands out and appears to be partially poorly attached by the marbled endpaper that was roughly glued to it, seems to be attached in its lower part.
Second volume clamp is worn but flat and does not detach.
Freckles in some areas.
Bookplate in the name of Serrigny.
It is included, by the same publisher.
Barthélémy and Méry, Napoleon in Egypt, Waterloo, and the son of man.
Numerous illustrations by Horace Vernet and Bellangé.
Some blemishes. Rubbed corners.
