Fanciullo con vassoio di frutta, oil on canvas, 18th century, Spain, unsigned, 83 x 62 cm, Caravaggisti style, Scuola caravaggesca (XVII–XVIII), good condition.
Description from the seller
Caravaggisti school (17th–18th century)
Oil on canvas depicting a young man with a basket of fruit, an artwork linked to the dissemination and legacy of Caravaggesque language in Europe, with particular reference to its reception in Spanish painting between the 17th and 18th centuries.
The painting clearly demonstrates the defining characteristics of Caravaggism: strong naturalism, theatrical use of chiaroscuro, oblique lighting that models volumes, and a direct and truthful representation of the subject. These elements constitute the very core of Caravaggio's legacy and form the basis for the development of Iberian naturalistic painting, particularly in the genre of the bodegón.
The composition, simple and focused on the figure and the still life in the foreground, combined with the palette of warm, earthy tones, alludes to that Caravaggesque language filtered through Spanish sensibility, widely spread and reinterpreted throughout the 17th and 18th centuries.
Technique and condition of preservation
Oil on canvas, 83 x 62 cm. The work has been restored and relined; it is in good conservation condition.
Provenance and auction references
The work was previously presented by Cambi Casa d’Aste (2014) as 'Spanish School of the 18th Century – Child with a Basket of Fruit' (minimum estimate €2,000), confirming its inclusion within Spanish painting influenced by the legacy of Caravaggio.
