Description from the seller
Journey Through the Upper Provinces of India, 1828 – Reginald Heber – Volume I (First Edition)
Handsome early nineteenth‑century travel narrative by Reginald Heber, Bishop of Calcutta, being Volume I of “A Narrative of a Journey through the Upper Provinces of India, from Calcutta to Bombay, 1824–1825; with Notes upon Ceylon; and an Account of a Journey to Madras and the Southern Provinces, 1826; and Letters Written in India”. This is the 1828 first edition, published in London by John Murray, here offered as Volume I only, complete with all called‑for plates and wood‑engraved illustrations for this volume, and retaining the full complement of early engraved views of Indian landscapes, architecture and everyday life.
The book is in good, sound condition for its age: the binding remains solid and the text block tight, with clean, legible pages and plates, and only the expected light age‑toning and foxing typical of a work approaching two centuries old; all illustrations for Volume I are present as collated, including the engraved frontispiece plates and in‑text woodcuts. An attractive example of an important and widely cited account of British India, ideal for the collector of early travel, South Asia, missionary or colonial history, and a very presentable copy for the shelf
