Description from the seller
The charters and privileges of the land of Rijnland by Simon van Leeuwen concern the Rijnland bailiwick and water authority, a region that extended over a large part of South Holland.
It did not encompass a single city, but a collection of cities, villages, and lordships that fell under the authority of the Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland.
Leiden – the administrative center of Rijnland, where the meetings of the Hoogheemraadschap also took place.
Haarlem – one of the larger cities within the area.
Alphen aan den Rijn – strategically located along the Oude Rijn.
Gouda – important due to trade and its location on the Hollandse IJssel.
Woerden – border town between Holland and Utrecht.
Katwijk – coastal town, important for drainage to the sea.
Lisse, Hillegom, Noordwijk – villages in the Bollenstreek, already of agricultural importance then.
Rijnland was not an independent province but a legal and administrative area primarily focused on water management.
It extended from the North Sea coast at Katwijk to Gouda and Woerden inland. Cities and villages within this area fell under the privileges and charters that Van Leeuwen compiled in his work.
Simon van Leeuwen - Charters and Privileges of the Land of Rijnland, including their consequences. Covering not only the charters and privileges of the court and water board of Rijnland but also various privileges, judgments, letters, appointments, and agreements. As well as the specific towns and villages within Rijnland, and the landscape and cities of Holland in general — Leyden, Rotterdam, the Hackens, 1667 — 743 pages — 21 x 16 cm
