AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Painting by the painter Giuseppe Guglielmo Umberto Caselli, (Luzzara, July 5, 1893 – La Spezia, December 19, 1976).
Most Beautiful Marina
Measurements: 100 x 65 cm (artwork only)
Contemporary cornice with small flaws.

Biography
Born in 1893 in the locality of Villarotta in Luzzara (Reggio Emilia), he studied at the Free School of the Nude at the Florence Academy. Returning to La Spezia, where he has resided since childhood, he was a student of Del Santo and Discovolo.

Engages with the artistic environment surrounding the new magazine L'Eroica by the Spezzino writer Ettore Cozzani and dedicates himself to woodcut engraving. In 1913, he meets Lorenzo Viani.

During World War I, he was taken prisoner and interned in the Mauthausen prisoner camp in Austria; from this experience, he created numerous works foreshadowing the drama of the subsequent conflict.

His painting, initially influenced by the early 20th-century divisionist experiences, evolves into a personal expressionism, close to Austrian avant-garde movements but also aligned with Viani's poetic style. Many of his works are inspired by memories of imprisonment.

With aeropainting works, in 1933 he exhibited at the Premio del Golfo organized by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, and he would go on to participate in many subsequent editions.

Very closely linked to La Spezia, he depicts many aspects of the city and its province, as well as Lunigiana and the nearby Cinque Terre in particular.
