Description from the seller
Title:
Perseus and Medusa — Bronze sculpture — by Antonio Canova — height 60 cm
Brief description
Bronze sculpture created using the lost-wax casting technique inspired by the famous Perseus with the Head of Medusa by Antonio Canova, a masterpiece of Neoclassicism. An artwork of great symbolic strength and formal elegance, ideal for collection or display furniture.
Extended description
This sculpture depicts Perseus, the mythological hero, in the act of showing the severed head of Medusa, a symbol of the victory of reason over chaos and of order over fear. The subject faithfully reproduces one of the greatest masterpieces of neoclassical sculpture, created by Antonio Canova between 1804 and 1806.
The work translates into patinated plaster the formal purity and compositional balance typical of Canova: Perseus's body is idealized, harmonious, built on a perfect balance of weights, while Medusa's head introduces a dramatic tension that emphasizes the contrast between beauty and horror.
Plaster, a material historically used for casts and studio models, allows for an extremely refined appreciation of anatomical details and surfaces. The patination gives the whole a noble and uniform appearance, reminiscent of the plastic rendering of classical sculpture.
Thanks to its significant yet balanced size, the sculpture is suitable for display in elegant environments, professional studios, private collections, or cultural settings.
