Black half-calf leather bindings, smooth spine with gilt title and volume numbers, decorated with gilt fillets, black boards, marbled endpapers and guards, size: 13.5 x 21.5 cm - Detailed table of contents: see photos - Both a member of the Academy of Sciences and a French Academician, Buffon embodies the spirit of the Enlightenment. His theories influenced two generations of naturalists, notably Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck and Charles Darwin. Celebrated by his contemporaries for his masterwork, Buffon was called the 'Pline of Montbard,' having worked on the subject for nearly 50 years.
Used condition, given the age, minor flaws may appear but without severity (scattered rust spots and small stains on some pages, and rarely old traces of adhesive paper), however, the bindings are in good condition and the notebooks are very securely attached.
