Northwest Africa 17584 (NWA 17584)
Purchased: 2025
Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R3-6)
History: Purchased by Mohamed Ali Loud in 2025 from a meteorite dealer in Mauritania.
Physical characteristics: Several brownish fragments, some covered with minor fusion crust.
Petrography: The meteorite exhibits a brownish interior and consists of up to 5 mm-sized, mostly angular Type 3, Type 6, and black melt clasts within a Type 3 matrix. Chondrules in Type 3 lithologies have an apparent average diameter of about 450 µm; olivine and low-Ca pyroxene are compositionally unequilibrated. In Type 6 clasts, ferroan olivine, diopside, and sodic plagioclase are the predominant mineral phases. Opaque phases include troilite, pentlandite, and Ti-bearing chromite; no metal has been detected.
