Very rare first edition of this landmark book by Hans Prinzhorn that explores the art created by psychiatric patients as a valid form of human creative expression, moving beyond a purely diagnostic approach. The book had an enormous impact on the art world and inspired avant-garde artists such as Max Ernst, André Breton, and Salvador Dalí, who were attracted by the raw, emotional power of this "Outsider Art" (Art Brut). Comes with 20 mostly colour plates and 187 in-text colour and black and white images.
Rubbing, bumping, and wear to the boards and spine. Some rubbing damage to the top of the back board. Pencil markings on the front flyleaf. Pencil markings on the title page and pen markings on its recto. From page 291 to the end the top outer edge of the pages is cockled and creased (see photos). Otherwise very little browning and spotting throughout. The text is clear, the illustrations are vibrant, and the binding is solid. Overall, a handsome copy in very good- condition.
