The Holy French Bible according to the Vulgate Latin reviewed by the command of Pope Sixtus V ... by Pierre Frizon, Penitentiary and Canon of the Church of Reims. Paris, Richer and Chevalier, 1621.
This concerns the first illustrated French Bible and the first French version of the Bible de Louvain.
The frontispiece is engraved by Michel Lasne, while the vignettes are engraved by Melchior Tavernier, Michel Faulte, Jean Ziarnko, Michel von Lochom, and Léonard Gaultier.
The Old Testament occupies the first 508 pages, the New Testament, including the Book of Ezra, covers pages 509 to 863, and includes two engraved maps. At the end of the volume, the following is added: Moyens pour discerner les Bibles françaises catholiques d'avec les huguenotes, Paris, Chevalier, 1621.
The specimen is bound in two folio volumes. Volume 1: frontispiece engraved, 5 pages including the printed title, 583 pages, 28 woodcut vignettes in the text; Volume 2: 1 page with printed title, 868 pages erroneously marked as 512, 43 woodcut vignettes in the text; 90 pages, 27 pages. The binding is 19th-century in leather and cardboard. On the spines, inlays of red and blue leather with the title and volume number indications. One of the two volumes has a detached cover. The condition of the internal parts is intact, with only rare signs of use.
