Lot of four Provençal terracotta and textile santons by Simone Jouglas (1907–2001), dating to 1940–1950, each about 23 cm high and 10 cm wide and deep, in good condition with age-related wear.
Description from the seller
These santons are among the first dressed by the famous Simone Jouglas.
The years 1944 to 1950
Rare collection
They are in good condition for their age, but of course, note the signs of wear and tear, as shown in the photos, which are also part of their description.
Simone Jouglas was born in Agde, where her father Ernest Victor was a captain in the 17th Infantry Regiment. They then moved to Digne in 1909, at which time her father was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor. Admitted as a reserve officer in August 1914, he first settled in Béziers with his wife's family, then permanently in Marseille after World War I.
She begins studies to become a dental ceramist. A visit to the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Marseille dedicated to casting techniques will change this course. In 1938, she enrolls as a student there and meets Paule Manzo née Thibon (1914-2001), whose father is also an officer in the army.
His father passed away in Marseille in January 1930, and his mother in January 1944. His elder brother, Robert Jouglas, alias Hegen Clavel, was a resistance fighter in the Maquis of the Glières plateau. He was executed in Marseille in 1944. She also participated in the resistance movement in the Marseille region.
Alone, she survives through her activity as a ceramist, which she has made her main occupation since 1944.
She passed away on July 31, 2001, at the age of 94. She remains a reference in the santonniers sector.
