Description from the seller
Bibliophile edition published by Bertrand Guégan and limited to only 100 copies on royal vellum paper from the Manufactures de Vidalon, this one being number 29.
Illustrated with pretty vignettes in the text by Grès.
Paperback, with a pastedown cover filled with a red vignette. In very good condition. Cover slightly faded and spine a bit creased, interior fresh and clean, without foxing. Very beautiful copy.
It only took a single poem by Clément Marot, composed in 1535 'on the nipple of a humble young lady,' to turn anatomical blazon into an unprecedented fashion phenomenon. In the following years, many poets, often close to the court of François I, engaged in this mental dissection and detailed the female body to praise each of its parts — from hair to foot, from throat to thigh, and even to the genitals.
First collected by Marot, these poems experienced their most famous edition in 1543, in an illustrated volume that for the first time brought together the coats of arms and their satirical counterparts, the contreblasons. This collection was one of the earliest collective endeavors in French poetry.
