Description from the seller
Original Edo-Period Woodblock-Printed Book
“Saigoku Kidan” (Strange Tales of the Western Provinces), Complete 2-Volume Set
Published in 1863 (Bunkyū 3)
Offered here is a complete set of Saigoku Kidan, an original Edo-period illustrated book published in Bunkyū 3 (1863). This work represents a remarkable collaboration between Tamenaga Shunsui, one of the most celebrated gesaku writers of the late Edo period, and Utagawa Kunisada, the leading ukiyo-e artist of his time. The cover illustrations are attributed to Toyokuni, further enhancing the artistic significance of the set.
Printed from original woodblocks, this two-volume work exemplifies the refined narrative style and visual sophistication of late Edo popular literature. The vivid polychrome covers remain well preserved, retaining strong color despite their age. An original illustrated wrapper (fukuro), now laid flat rather than formed as a pouch, is also included.
Condition:
Overall good condition for a work of this age. The covers show particularly fine color. There is some expected age-related wear, including light rubbing and minor handling marks, but no major losses. A well-balanced and attractive example suitable for collectors of Edo-period books, ukiyo-e-related materials, or Japanese literary history.
A rare opportunity to acquire a complete and visually appealing set that embodies the collaboration of two masters of Edo culture.
The contents compile a variety of mysterious and legendary tales handed down in the western provinces of Japan. These include supernatural anecdotes, strange occurrences related to travel and wandering, and eerie folklore rooted in regional traditions. Among the most notable episodes are ghost stories connected to the Genpei War, in which vengeful spirits linger after the great conflict, as well as tales concerning the legendary Nine-Tailed Fox (Kyūbi no Kitsune)—one of the most famous and enduring figures in Japanese myth.
These narratives reflect the Edo-period fascination with the uncanny and the supernatural, offering valuable insight into popular beliefs and storytelling culture of the time.
