Malachite (from the Greek Μολοχίτης, mauve green) is a copper mineral belonging to the carbonate class (to be precise it is a cupric carbonate hydroxide), and is effervescent upon contact with hydrochloric acid.
It is almost always microcrystalline (an alteration layer of copper minerals), but it is also found in fibrous layers, in kidney-shaped or efflorescent clusters. Malachite can rarely be found in small, needle-shaped crystals in some cavities.
