Description from the seller
SOUGHT-AFTER CHINESE PROPAGANDA PHOTOBOOK, published for GDR (DDR):
Martin Parr, Wassink Lundren, The Chinese Photobook, From the 1900s to the Present, page 224 and 225
Title in English: "The Red Sun Lights the Road Forward for Tachai".
Scarce Mao Tse Tung biography with many photos - published in different languages.
Here the GDR/DDR version by 'Verlag für fremdsprachige Literatur'.
'The Publishing House for Foreign Literature in Moscow was founded in March 1931 under the name ‘Publishing Co-operative of Foreign Workers in the USSR’ and renamed ‘Publishing House for Foreign Literature’ in June 1938. In 1963, it was merged with the 'Verlag für ausländische Literatur' and renamed 'Verlag Progress'.
In the GDR, he was known as the publisher of the book series 'Bibliothek ausgewählter Werke der Sowjetliteratur'.
In the 1970s, the publishing house was still publishing books in around forty languages on a wide range of topics, from Marxist classics and Soviet propaganda material to children's books, scientific works and fiction. The majority of the books were translations from Russian, but many works were also published in the original language. In 1974 alone, 950 titles were published with a total print run of 24.1 million copies.'

THIS IS THE VERY FIRST PHOTOBOOK AUCTION ON CATAWIKI - dedicated entirely to the world of the former "DDR"/"GDR" ("GERMAN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC" or "EAST GERMANY") which existed from 1949 to 1990.
Still largely undiscovered and unexplored, this field offers a wealth of fascinating discoveries for collectors.
5Uhr30.com presents exceptional works by renowned and emerging artists, survey works, compelling monographs, as well as extraordinarily rare small vintage catalogues, vintage children’s books and vintage factory photobooks; signed publications, posters, and much more.
"In agriculture, learn from Dazhai (Tachai), was Chairman Mao's famous exhortation to peasants across the nation. Dazhai was a model commune in Shanxi Province that far out-produced other communes in its agricultural yields, despite frequent droughts and severe flooding.
According to Communist Party lore, the peasants of Dazhai undertook massive engineering works to divert water, terrace hillsides,
and reclaim land, all without expert help or heavy machinery. Literally millions of people visited the commune to learn from the miraculous transformation achieved.
In the first line of the introduction, by the celebrated Dazhai model farmer Chen Yonggui (frequently depicted in this book), the symbol of Mao as the sun reappears when he states, "Chairman Mao is the reddest of the red suns in the hearts of us revolutionaries." Ostensibly, the purpose of this book was to extol the can-do determination of the Chinese people in triumphing over nature. It also serves to document the growing deification of Mao, whose portrait stares out from the first page and reappears again and again, in homes and workplaces and even on placards in the fields where peasants and workers study their copies of Quotations from Mao Zedong, better known as the «Little Red Book." Representatives of ethnic minorities and leaders of other communes are shown being greeted by Mao or taking notes outdoors during a snowstorm as they "learn from Dazhai." Interspersed with the photographs throughout this book are excerpts from Mao's teachings, printed in white against a red background.
In 1980, however, the Dazhai miracle was revealed to have been a sham. The earthworks, it transpired, were built largely by the People's Liberation Army with heavy machinery, and the phenomenal grain production figures had been falsified.'
