Description from the seller
From Chateaubriand, François-René. Atala, or The Loves of Two Savages in the Desert. Paris Migneret, 1801. Rare edition of the famous novel by the great French writer and politician, one of the most important works of French Romanticism. The work, inspired by the author's travels in North America, narrates the adventurous, romantic, and dramatic events of Atala, a Christian daughter of a tribe chief, and the young Indian Chactas. Period cardboard binding. Gold title label on the spine. Dimensions 13x9 cm, pages XXIV, 207. Excellent condition.
Fenelon. Adventures of Telemachus. Paris and Milan Antoine Fontana 1828. Charming 19th-century edition of Fenelon's classic about the events of Ulysses and his son Telemachus. In fact, the work contained an implicit critique of Louis XIV's autocratic absolutism, whose wars and taxes on peasants had brought the country to famine. Fenelon was removed from Versailles, and the work was banned but circulated clandestinely throughout Europe. Two volumes. Bound in rustic cardboard of the period. Engraved ornament at the frontispiece of the first volume. Dimensions 12x7 cm, pages 324, 252. Excellent condition.
