Antique Gaïac wood table from France, dating to the 17th century, in good condition with some wear and age-related stains; dimensions 97 x 73 x 64 cm.
Description from the seller
A bit of history:
From the 17th century onwards, the major French port cities specialized in international trade, especially with the islands. The outfitting of ships and trade made the Atlantic coast wealthy: St Malo, Nantes, La Rochelle, Bordeaux. This emerging bourgeoisie settled in prestigious, richly furnished homes (private mansions, manors).
Combining trends from the capital and local styles, port cabinetmakers create numerous solid wood furniture pieces using exotic woods imported from across the Atlantic (rosewood, guaiac, citron tree, etc.). Mahogany becomes the very essence of French port furniture. Sometimes simple and elegant in style, they can also be richly carved.
Description :
Gaiac table with a belt drawer. Turned baluster feet joined by an X-shaped stretcher with stepped sections and a central spindle.
