Description from the seller

Rare original edition of this travel account by the Nîmes explorer Paul Soleillet (1842-1886), published posthumously based on his notes and travel journals by geographer Gabriel Gravier (1827-1904).

Illustrated with a frontispiece and a large folding map at the end.

Paul Soleillet traveled across Africa in the 19th century and explored regions of the Sahara where no European had yet ventured. Living on the strict minimum and adopting the customs of the country, he earned the friendship of all those he met, who welcomed him and treated him as one of their own.

It departs from Dakar, Saint-Louis, follows the Senegal River and the Niger River up to Ségou.

Bound in brown half-percaline with corner protectors, smooth spine decorated with gold tools. Cover boards preserved (without spine).

Condition: Spine worn, yellowed paper, rare foxing spots. Good copy, untrimmed.
