Gezicht op een (mogelijk de Delftse) vaart bij Rotterdam is a 19th‑century oil painting from the Netherlands that is sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
Wilhelmus Harmanus Jintes was born in Groningen on April 24, 1855, and died in Amsterdam on November 24, 1924. He lived and worked in Groningen until 1877, then in Rotterdam until 1915, and spent his final years in Amsterdam.
Jintes was a warehouse clerk when he started drawing and painting at the age of 15. He preferred an artist's life and between 1870 and 1924, he drew and painted as a self-taught artist with a skilled hand, creating atmospheric still lifes and landscapes in the Impressionist style, with themes inspired by the artists belonging to the famous movement of the Hague School.
Among the landscapes known to be by Jintes are scenes with a shepherd and a flock of sheep, winter landscapes with mills, polder landscapes often featuring a fisherman or farmer on a boat in a canal...
In this painting, we also see a man on a boat in the water of a canal, which appears to lead into a busy harbor full of boat masts in the distance. On the right side of the painting, there is a row of city (pack) houses standing directly at the water without a quay. It could be a view of the Delftsevaart in Rotterdam, the city where Jintes resided between 1877 and 1915.
Jintes painted this atmospheric scene in oil paint on panel and signed it at the bottom right. The dimensions without frame are 31 x 18.5 cm, and with frame, the painting measures 44.2 x 37 x 5 cm.
Works by W.H. Jintes are part of private and museum collections and are occasionally sold at art auctions. He is registered with the RKD – Netherlands Institute for Art History. In 1891, he participated with the still life 'Uyen en citroenen' in the triennial exhibition at the Academy of Fine Arts and Technical Sciences in Rotterdam.
