Original edition of this account of Commander Marchand's expedition in Africa, published by the illustrator and painter Charles Castellani (1838-1913).

In 1896, Castellani traveled to the Congo with the Marchand mission, on behalf of the newspaper L'Illustration. He drew portraits of many members of the mission, such as Captain Baratier, Marchand, Fredon, as well as of characters encountered during the months spent in Africa.

Illustrations within and outside the author's text (reproductions of photographs, drawings, and maps)

Bound, half-green percaline with corners, smooth spine decorated with gilded fittings. Covers preserved (without spine).
Condition: In good condition. Binding very clean. Yellowed paper, some foxing. Untrimmed.

Author's homage stamp on the half-title page, newspaper clipping glued to the verso of the frontispiece concerning the work.
