Description from the seller
Scheurich Model 420-54 Ceramic Floor Vase with Animal Decor
This imposing, extra-large ceramic floor vase, or Bodenvase, is a striking example of West German Pottery (WGP) from the 1970s, specifically manufactured by Scheurich Keramik. This exceptional piece is a compelling centerpiece for any serious WGP collection and is in excellent vintage condition.
Color & Pattern
This vase is highly distinctive for its vibrant, contrasting color scheme of matte black over a glossy, fiery red-orange (crimson/umber) background. The body features a deeply modeled, or Sgraffito, relief with bold, black silhouettes of stylized horses or deer. These animal figures are framed by geometric bands of triangles and circles in the same crimson and black palette, creating a powerful, tribal-inspired aesthetic.
Styling & Condition
The large, handled form is characteristic of Scheurich's Bodenvase series. The combination of the smooth, glossy red-orange glaze and the graphic, Sgraffito black design epitomizes the bold and exotic design trends of the 1970s. The model number is located on the foot of the vase.
