I, 544; Pollio 205-207; Rives Childs 128-130 (compared to the collation in Rives-Child, some discrepancies are noticeable, including the absence of errata lists, indicating that this copy is among the earliest printed editions). - The first printed edition, translated from the French manuscript. Casanova began writing this perhaps the most famous memoir of the 18th century in 1790; Brockhaus purchased the original manuscript in 1821 from Casanova's great-nephew, Carlo Angiolini, and published the revised text from the following year. The first French edition appeared as an unauthorized retranslation (!) only between 1825-1829, with the original French text then published from 1826-38 in the translation by Jean Laforgue. - Rives Child: "This is the veritable first edition ... the first five volumes were the work of Schütz and the first four contain valuable prefaces by him ... some of the text which Laforgue omitted has been preserved in the German translation and the edition is very valuable on that account" - Hayn-Got.: "Only Vols. 1-3 with the free sections, Vols. 4-10 castrated. This first edition ... is very skillfully edited and reads better than the (late) Buhl edition, and the introductory explanations of the editor are of importance ... not often complete!" - Only in 1960 could Brockhaus decide to publish the "uncastrated" text. The original manuscript was sold by Brockhaus to the Paris Bibliothèque Nationale in 2010 for 7.2 million euros. - Slightly worn and bumped. Clean and good copy!
