First French edition (1900) of L. Schmitt's Correspondance de Wagner et de Liszt, bound in demi cuir, 308 pages, 21 × 14 cm, published by Breitkopf & Haertel, in good condition.
Description from the seller
First French edition of this correspondence, by L. Schmitt. Complete in two volumes, bound together in one volume and featuring a half-morocco binding with band and ribbed spine (original cover preserved).
"Genius does not like contemporary genius; that is a fact," affirmed Péguy. Surely, there is no more striking rebuttal to this statement than the friendship between Liszt and Wagner: a nearly forty-year friendship, sometimes stormy, interrupted by coolings-off, and even bordering on rupture, as their correspondence—unique between two composers—allows us to trace. Covering mainly the 1850s, this correspondence reveals the genesis of Wagner's theoretical works and several of his masterpieces: The Ring of the Nibelung, Tristan and Isolde, while Liszt abandoned the laurels of virtuosity to become Kapellmeister in Weimar and transformed into a prolific and inventive composer.
Overall well-preserved copy: the spine is slightly insolated and there are small signs of wear on the headbands. The hinge is solid. The interior is fresh with tiny foxing spots.
