Description from the seller
Rare original edition of this collection of works by Bernard de La Monnoye, the only one published during the author's lifetime by M. de Salengre in 1716.
Illustrated with a beautiful title vignette engraved by Bernard Picard and five charming engraved banners (unsigned).
Edition made without the author's knowledge and containing several pieces that are too free and others not authored by him. The only edition published during the author's lifetime.
Preserved in an elegant period binding in full marbled calfskin, with a spine decorated with gold tooling and compartments adorned with small stamps and a rose in the center of each compartment. A brown title piece with gilded initials, and red speckled edges. Very carefully printed on laid paper.
In good condition. Headcap trimmed, leather rubbed at the corners, joints, and cuts. Interior fresh and clean, endpapers slightly browned, paper well-white, free of foxing or rare spots.
Bernard de La Monnoye, born on June 15, 1641, in Dijon, and died on October 15, 1728, was a French poet, philologist, and critic, mainly known for his Noei Borguignon. In 1707, La Monnoye agreed to come to Paris with his books. His modesty alone could, for several years, keep him away from the Académie française; he was received there unanimously in 1713, in place of Régnier-Desmarais.
Poems by M. de La Monnoye of the Académie Française, with his eulogy. Published by M. de S***.
The Hague, at Charles Le Vier's, 1716
In-12 (17 x 11 cm); LVIII + table + 244 pages
