Seconde Patrie, an illustrated edition by Jules Verne with 68 drawings by G. Roux and 2 maps, published by Hetzel in Paris in 1910, in-8, 471 pages, bound in red bradel binding with a globe motif and gilt edges, in good condition.
Description from the seller
First edition, large octavo illustrated with 68 drawings by George Roux, as well as 2 maps.
End, BH catalog of 4 pages (see Bottin p. 343).
Well-preserved copy in its beautiful publisher Hetzel's cardboard box with a gold globe on the front cover and a lighthouse on the spine, executed in bradel binding with red percaline decorated on the front cover and spine with polychrome designs. Signed plaque Blancheland, bound by Souze. Gilt edges.
Good overall condition. Bright gilding. Slightly worn back, rubbed covers with small losses of cloth, brown stain on the hinges, at the cuts, and in the cartouche (title). Perforated corners. Some discreet marks on the second cover.
Solid hinge. Slightly yellowed paper with scattered foxing. Beautiful copy.
Second homeland is a Robinsonade. A great admirer of the novel The Swiss Robinson, written in 1812 by the Swiss-German pastor Johann David Wyss, Jules Verne imagines a sequel to the adventures of the Zermatt family. The travelers who left for England at the end of Wyss's novel are abandoned by pirates on an unknown island, which turns out to be their starting point, New Switzerland. Jules Verne explains this in his preface, one of the few in the Voyages extraordinaires.
