Description from the seller
Louis de Carrieres
Literal commentary on the Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments, inserted in the French translation by the R. P. de Carrières, Priest of the Oratory of Jesus.
Work that has become rare.
Louis de Carrières (1662-1717), a priest of the Oratory, made his name famous through a literal commentary on all the books of the Bible of an entirely new kind. This commentary consists of inserting a few phrases or half-phrases, often even one or two words, into the text to make it accessible to the simplest faithful. These short interjections are in italics so that the reader does not confuse the commentator's extensive additions with the sacred discourse. The choice is made with such taste, and the author so well grasped the spirit of this divine book, that one hardly notices the difference between the commentary and the original text.
As the editions succeeded each other, they were used daily in the 18th century.
Complete edition in 10 volumes.
8 volumes for the Old Testament and 2 volumes for the New Testament.
539,560,510,678,559,536,656,490,699 and 609 pages
Solid leather bindings
Minor defects: friction, small material losses.
Interior in good condition (minor dirt or browning without severity)
Beautiful copy of the Bible.
