Description from the seller
Author
Bruno Giunta (XX) was an Italian painter. An active artist in the Venetian context during the first half of the twentieth century, his artistic career is intertwined with the most prominent exhibition institutions of the lagoon city. Although details about his birth and education remain fragmentary, his presence is historically documented within the cultural fabric of the Triveneto during the difficult years of the Second World War.
The central period of his notable activity dates back to the 1940s. In 1943, Giunta exhibited at the Fourth Interprovincial Triveneta Trade Union Exhibition, and in 1944, he participated in the Bevilacqua La Masa exhibition in Venice. At that time, this institution served as the crucial testing ground for young artists, often acting as a prelude to the Biennale and welcoming the most promising voices of Italian painting. An artist with a figurative background, he was visually influenced by the experience of the Scuola di Burano.
Description
"Venice, Boats and Fishermen in the Lagoon", oil on panel, 73*93cm with frame, 50*70cm for the panel alone, signed at the bottom right, datable to the 1940s.
The scene depicts a group of moored fishing boats, with fishermen working on their boats and on the docks, while in the background the lagoon city can be seen. The boats, with their sails lowered, nets, and fishing tools, are the main subject, creating a visual focal point that guides the eye toward the horizon. The fishermen, figures outlined with quick and confident brushstrokes, are busy arranging the nets, contributing to a sense of dynamism and lived-in life. The composition, arranged along a diagonal line crossing the canvas, adds depth and movement to the image, capturing the moment.
The painting is distinguished by a quick and vibrant brushstroke, with touches of color that create movement and brightness. The color palette is rich and complex, characterized by a range of warm and cool colors, with a remarkable play of reflections and transparencies in the lagoon water. The reflections of boats, sails, and the sky blend and fragment on the water's surface, creating a shimmering luminosity effect that captures the viewer and highlights the artist's technical mastery. The diffuse and evocative light of the lagoon environment is rendered with great effectiveness, giving the work a poetic and vibrant atmosphere.
The work fits within the panorama of Venetian painting of that period and shows clear influences of the Burano School. The impressionistic brushwork, luminous use of color, and attention to reflections on the water are typical elements of this artistic tradition, which Giunta reinterprets with his personal expressive sensitivity. A piece of fine execution and fresh aesthetic impact.
Condition Report
Good, almost excellent overall condition. The painting is intact throughout, with vivid, clearly legible colors and brushstrokes. The frame is included.
Tracked and insured shipment with adequate packaging.
