ITEM DESCRIPTION:
Type: kabuto
Materials: Forged iron, traditional lacquer, leather, silk lacing
Condition: age-consistent wear and patina, potential restoration
This Japanese kabuto is a classic robust bowl shape designed for practical protection rather than elaborate construction. This type was widely used during the Edo period, particularly by mid-ranking samurai and retainers who favored reliability and comfort over ornamental complexity.
The helmet bowl (bachi) is forged iron, showing a deep, natural patina with heavily worn remains of its original lacquer. This wear is entirely consistent with age and long-term use and should be regarded as a positive indicator of authenticity rather than a flaw.
Mounted at the front is a metal maedate featuring a geometric design of three interconnected circles. While reminiscent of abstract family crests, no definitive clan attribution can be made, and it is therefore described accurately without speculative assignment.
The fukigaeshi are finished in black lacquer and decorated with a stylized gilt mon, applied symmetrically. The design is clearly heraldic in nature; however, its precise family origin cannot be confirmed, and it is presented as a traditional decorative samurai motif.
The shikoro, constructed from multiple lacquered lames in a reddish-brown tone, is laced with dark blue odoshi. It displays expected age wear, lacquer loss, and surface abrasions consistent with genuine Edo-period use, with no evidence of modern over-restoration.
The top retains its tehen kanamono, simple and functional, along with the rear kasa-jirushi no kan, used for attaching cords or small identifiers.
The interior preserves its traditional structure, including original or early cords, reinforcing the integrity and historical continuity of the piece.
Conclusion:
A kabuto with strong character and honest wear. This is not a ceremonial reconstruction but a helmet rooted in real samurai use. An excellent acquisition for collectors who value authentic patina, historical integrity, and martial presence over cosmetic perfection.
All bids are binding, if you are not interested don't let other bidders miss the opportunity. Winning the auction and not paying for the item blocks you from bidding on catawiki on any auction forever, keep this in mind before bidding.
