Description from the seller
Original rare edition of this technical treatise dedicated to distillation and perfumery, describing the preparation of eaux d’odeur (Eaux d’Ange, spirituous waters, essential oils), cosmetics tinctures and decoctions, as well as opiates for teeth. The author presents numerous precise recipes for ointments, essences, perfumes, and cosmetics intended to beautify the skin or perfume clothing. The work includes a preface, an analytical table, and a systematic classification of the processes.
Published as a follow-up to the Reasoned Treatise on Distillation by the same author, this text testifies to the high level of artisanal and chemical expertise in the perfume industry of the 18th century.
The true author, Antoine Hornot, a Parisian distiller originally from Nuits-Saint-Georges, signed under the pseudonym Déjean. Although some bibliographers, such as Duveen or Ferchl, contested this attribution in favor of Ferdinand Dejean, modern research confirms Hornot's authorship.
Full Havana brown sheepskin binding from the period, with a spine featuring raised bands decorated with gilded panels and floral ornaments, and a red morocco title piece.
State: Worn binding, headcaps shaved, cracks on the hinges, and worn corners. Interior fresh, paper slightly yellowed with some scattered foxing. Good complete copy.
