The translation of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey by Alexander Pope (1688-1744) is considered one of the greatest achievements of English literature.
Fourth edition of the English translation of the Iliad by Pope in 6 volumes, in-12, printed at the same address as the original (1715-1726). The illustration includes portraits and 30 (8 + 5 + 4 + 4 + 6 + 3) engraved plates, several of which are folding, depicting scenes from the Trojan War, maps of Homeric Greece, vignettes, and figures such as Achilles' helmet (volume 5).

Encouraged by Swift, Addison, and Steele, among others, Pope began translating Homer in 1713. This arduous undertaking proved to be the most laborious literary project of his life, but also the one for which he was particularly well prepared. (DNB)
