Piero Dorazio, an Italian painter, was born in Rome in 1927. Dorazio began his student life studying architecture but soon shifted towards art, especially painting. He was twenty years old when he participated in the drafting of the 'Forma I' manifesto, which would guide the entirety of his future work.
In 1950, he founded the bookstore-gallery 'La edad de oro' with M. Guerilli and A. Perilli, an artists' cooperative for the dissemination of art and art press. In 1952 and 1953, he collaborated with the magazine 'Arti visivi' and, almost two years later, published 'The fantasy of art in modern life'.
Next, he embarks on a long series of highly formative trips (Prague, Paris, the United States) in 1960, where he is a professor of art at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia). In France, he meets Braque, Arp, Léger, Magnelli, Le Corbusier, artists he greatly admires. In the United States, Donazio associates with Hans Richter and Robert Motherwell.
While specializing in Italian Renaissance art, Piero Dorazio combines his work as a painter, art critic, lecturer, and exhibition organizer. Starting in 1984, he collaborates with the "Corriere della Sera" as his permanent art critic. He begins his career as a figurative painter, then evolves towards a Cubist style; subsequently into Futurism with vivid and contrasting colors. The linear structure appears in 1947. He experiences a Constructionist phase (1955) and later an Informal phase. Gesture is always of primary importance; his "nets" of lines and opposing colors create a subtle optical mix of tonalities and are the expression of his conception of gesture.
Piero Dorazio passed away in May 2005.
