Description
Second edition of the significant genealogical work, which includes an extensive collection of copperplate engravings depicting the family trees of the leading European royal and noble houses of the time, and unusually also showing the genealogy of the Turkish emperors.
The finely crafted copper engravings include family trees, portraits, and coats of arms, set against the backdrop of city views and panoramas that closely resemble Georg Braun's (1541-1622) and Franz Hogenberg's (1572-1618) Civitates Orbis Terrarum.
The work contains a total of 46 family trees of the most noble princely houses of Europe, engraved by Dominicus Custos. The genealogical copper engravings include, in part, portraits and coats of arms as well as representations of the residences. The head vignettes are partly by Raphael Custos after J. M. Kager.
Antonio Albizzi was an Italian jurist and genealogist. In 1576, he was in the service of Cardinal Duke Andreas of Austria. In 1585, he converted to Lutheranism and spent the rest of his life in the Protestant Imperial City of Kempten, where he died in 1626.
Equipment
An allegorical, engraved title, a full-page copperplate with blank heraldic cartouches, a portrait of Albizzi, and 46 (23 double-page size) copperplate plates by Dominicus Custos with family trees. On the reverse, there is typographic text and 25 engraved head vignettes.
Collation
6 non-numbered leaves, 46 Roman-numbered leaves (of which 23 are double leaves).
5 not numbered sheet register. The last blank sheet is missing. Complete copy in the text.
cover
Marbled cardboard cover with parchment spine and corners, probably from around 1920.
Very good condition with only minor signs of use. Dimensions: large portfolio 41.5 x 30 x 2.5 cm.
state
Good and genuine condition with age and usage signs. The plates are mostly clean copies. Edges are partially finger- and water-stained. Some are slightly cropped. The reverse side heading of Plate XIII is cropped. A few plates have cropped edges. The text title with a larger restored edge tear. The six-page title page with repaired and reinforced edge tears. Page 5 of the title page has a lower edge tear with slight text loss, also repaired. Plates 2, 3, and 27 have inconspicuous reinforced edge tears and rips. Plate 3 has a repaired missing section at the bottom of the bow. Plates 4 and 6, as well as the last page, have a printed note with a closed larger tear. The six-page index has a small worm track at the bottom of the bow and increasingly water-stained lower right margin.
Provenance
1695 - Benedictine monastery St. Veit near Neumarkt. On the back of the title, there is a coat of arms ex libris with the inscription: 'Marianus D:G: Abbas Monasterii S: Viti cis Rotham'. This refers to Marian Wieser, who was abbot of the St. Veit monastery from 1695 to 1720.
1924 - Countess Nandine Berchtold. Her handwritten gift note on the front mirror. She was the daughter of the Austrian ambassador in London, Count Louis Karolyi, and the wife of the Austrian Foreign Minister, Count Berchtold.
1974 - Illegible handwritten private owner entry on the front mirror.
