Description from the seller
Limited to only 500 copies, this is the first printing of the 20 fine original compositions by Géo Colucci, engraved in etching. Our copy, printed on vellum on the forme, is numbered 272.
Preserved in a beautiful binding by René Kieffer in full mahogany morocco, covers decorated with an elaborate blind-stamped design, smooth spine adorned with motifs echoing the cover design, gilt top. Covers and spine preserved.
Superb work by Kieffer, with a binding of good appearance, some scuffs on the hinges, headbands, and edges, but nothing serious. Interior impeccable.
Very beautiful specimen.
In 1917, Géo Colucci traveled in Africa and began to paint. Returning to Paris in 1919, he exhibited for the first time. He displayed etchings at the Salon de la Nationale and participated in the Salons of Autumn and the Surindépendants. He later illustrated works including La Mort de Philae by Loti.
The death of Philae constitutes a report of impressions and observations from travels. The mariner-academician keenly observes Egypt's shift into tourism and its entry into 'modernization'. Pierre Loti (without abandoning his Orientalist nostalgia) shows remarkable insight there. Mahé, Repertoire of luxury editions, p. 54 - Carteret IV, The Bibliophile's Treasure / Modern Illustrations, p. 246 - Bénézit III, Dictionary of painters, p. 123.
Signed; Louis Jou; Géo Colucci; Pierre Loti
