Description from the seller

Very beautiful illustrated editions of the works of Jules Vallès published by Mornay between 1920 and 1930, adorned with fine wood engravings by Henri Barthélémy (1884–1977).

Our copy includes four volumes: The Insurgent, The Child, The Refractors, and The Baccalaureate.

Limited to 1,000 copies, this one is one of 40 copies on vellum, specially printed for Mr. André Coq (L'Enfant, le Bachelier). Enriched with a suite of woodcuts printed on Chinese paper for the Insurgé.

Preserved in beautiful half-ebony morocco bindings with corner pieces, darkly decorated with the title in gold lettering, with gilded edges. Covers and spine preserved.
In very good condition. Slightly sunned spine (evenly), minor rubbing. Interior fresh and clean, free of foxing, slight transfer of engravings on some facing pages.

Jules Vallès, born Jules Vallez on June 11, 1832, in Puy-en-Velay, and died on February 14, 1885, in Paris 5th arrondissement, was a French far-left journalist, writer, and politician. Founder of the newspaper Le Cri du peuple, he was among those elected during the Paris Commune in 1871. Sentenced to death, he was forced into exile in London from 1871 to 1880.
