Luxury edition of the Old Testament published in 1901 and preserved in a superb binding, entirely in Bordeaux canvas, adorned with a rich gold decoration and blind-stamped on the covers with a central angel bearing the title, and four medallions depicting the evangelists in their allegorical form, a gilded floral border, a smooth spine decorated with the title in Gothic initials, borders, and similar blind motifs. Gilt head. The endpapers are decorated with a beautiful floral design in pink and water green.
Adorned with a portrait of Antonin-Dalmace Sertillanges on the frontispiece, with lovely illustrations in banners and tailpieces, and decorated initials printed in red and black.
In very good condition. Rare copy bound in this publisher’s binding. Slightly rubbed edges, corners, headcaps, and joints. Clean covers. Interior in very good condition, with some rare foxing and small stains on the edges.
First volume alone (Old Testament), complete in itself.
Antonin-Gilbert Sertillanges, known in religion as Antonin-Dalmace Sertillanges, was born on November 16, 1863, in Clermont-Ferrand, France, and died on July 26, 1948, in Sallanches, France. He was a renowned French Dominican priest and moral philosopher. He is mainly known for his studies on Saint Thomas Aquinas and Thomism, and for having opposed the peace proposals of Pope Benedict XV in the pulpit on December 10, 1917, in the presence of the wife of the President of the Republic. He is the author of several works and articles on Henri Bergson.
