Description from the seller
SPAIN | Two large Catalan faience plates; probably La Bisbal d’Empordà – La Corbata (1890/1910)
Two magnificent, highly decorative wall plates, perfect for an old Spanish ambiance. Catalan faience / majolica, tin-glazed ceramics from the La Bisbal d’Empordà region.
Diameter approximately 31 cm each, with only minor rim bumps, no restorations. Traditional blue and white painting, characteristic of production from the late 19th to early 20th century. Depiction of the motif pair 'La Corbata' (Lady and Cavalier) – a classic iconographic theme of Catalan folk ceramics since the 17th century.
Typical edge painting with dynamic leaf, fan, and feather ornaments, hand-painted initial 'RJ' on the underside – common for workshops of the region, which were mostly signed with simple initials.
Distinctive, natural craquelure of the old glaze. Old metal hangers on the back, directly from the period.
From a private art and design collection.
